POEM: A Rushing in the Ears Unto Death

A Rushing in the Ears Unto Death

Susurrus, you fleeting glimpse of dashing ear with salty shake
a sliver of caress and yes. You sideswipe my sense of sound
like the Doppler of a siren passing—pitch inflecting ambulance
grief with more urgency than that rushing blare implies while still.

The tintinnabulation of my grandmother’s chimes intertwined
with my impression of regeneration, spring injecting itself
through every shoot and tree. The way the soul shakes staring
skyward at night beside a lake in the woods, no sirens here,

Just stand and gape at a growing confluence of galactic smears
propinquity to the moon on a vast enough scale, footsteps away
if you close your eyes and stride with a faith like a child knows
the swing will cradle their oscillations and will not buckle

As a cracked and leaking hope—the agonous combatants wield
their sticks and race from teeter-totter to jungle gym, how soft
and impermanent we are, how fragile—yet so warlike, the young soldiers shriek.
The brontide of our souls crashing from dream to sleep to death,

It envelops our final breath, that roar, until at last our view is washed clean.

POEM: The Interconnected Rages

The Interconnected Rages
My anger sketches out the landscape
an architect of scratchy twigs and jagged lines
(I feel something deeper than need and thus
unnameable) insistence I have a big thing to say.
To winter even the least of my worries—insurmountable.
Slicker than a seal looks, oily,
black like crude-soaked down.
My weeping robs its tears from famine victims
whose breaths billow a tornado.
We thus destroy each other
with sighs whose wrath could split the lightning,
shocking more than a downed power line
through the limp then stiff then limp again
form of a blackened infant.

Songs about hope

"And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me. Shine until tomorrow, let it be."

So I just walked through hell. Really.
It's been a long couple months.

I feel like I'm coming out the other side of a truly horrid ordeal, well it's not that I feel that way so much as that's the way it really is. And it is pretty glorious to be able to sit here and listen to "Here Comes the Sun" and "Let It Be" and not feel cynical about it at all.

You know it's a pretty horrific ordeal when it turns an atheist into some semblance of a believer--and please don't think I mean "Christian."

What I mean is I believe there to be a higher force in this universe that had a hand in my being able to keep breathing--and that's pretty cool.

So...yeah. No smart-ass sign-off line, no hip bullshit. I'm just fucking glad to be alive.

I miss Keith. But I can't keep letting his death kill me. Cuz that's where I was heading.

Love you everyone,

Rosswell

Insane Dream

I got shot last night. Well, in a dream I got shot. It was madness, I tell ya, MADNESS!

The strangest thing was that after the shooting (in the belly with a 10 gauge, apparently, although the person who did it used a pistol. I saw the surveillance footage on the news from my hospital bed. How they managed to hit me straight on in the belly while shooting at our car from the driver's side is anyone's guess) I went through the whole process of going to the hospital, having surgery, coming out of anesthesia, and somehow learned all of the following:

The five people involved in attempting to kill Ashley Van Driesche, someone else in the backseat, and myself were so comically inept as to tag their names all over my presumably soon-to-be dead body. The girl who actually pulled the trigger (a minor who was forced into the role of reaper by the four adults in the car because she would only do a few years) left a strangely heartfelt note about how I was going to get better and have a great life...well, she left that note on my left arm. Additionally, there was a note (also on my arm. This was all on my left arm.) indicating that the author hoped I would die. And he called me a bastard. Charming.

Now. Why did they do it? Well, apparently they were not impressed by the cat emblem on the specially-ordered license plate of our car. I guess they thought it was a little "too gay." Words were exchanged, tempers flared, I took a slug in the belly. So thanks a lot, Ashley. If you hadn't ordered that "Cat Lover For Life!" license plate, I wouldn't have been shot.

At the hospital, I walked in on my own...I think I walked in on my own. I had no recollection of what had transpired, I was in a ridiculous amount of pain, and I was going all crazy diva soap-opera-star-having-her-big-daytime-Emmy-scene. Well, it was perhaps slightly less dramatic than some of my actual hospital visits, but it was pretty pathetic. After a bit, they started giving me shots. I would ask what they were giving me and they would name drugs that didn't exist. At some point they realized that the drugs weren't getting into me due to the fact that my abdominal cavity was flooding with precious blood from a nicked artery (fancy that, shot in the guts and I got a "nicked artery") (which, yeah, I know it doesn't make a lot of sense but it's a dream so just go with it) and the nurse shoves the IV tube into a hole in my gut (presumably not the bullet wound) and suction, suction, suction.

We were somewhere around O.R., in the center of the hospital, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like, "I have a high tolerance. You should give me more."

I went under. I woke up. It was the social event of the season in that waiting room. Everyone who's anyone (at least in my life) was in that waiting room. I valiantly trudged out of the recovery room and swore my revenge.

Flash forward: I have insisted that charges be dropped. I have informed the police that I'll be killing those sons'a'bitches myself. It seems the police in dreamland are more inclined to allow a vigilante a bit of leeway. I moved into a house with a trusty sidekick (we were both pathetically addicted to the narcotics prescribed to combat our now-undeniable agony, but not in junky way, more like in a rugged, handsome, "watch as I bravely slog my way through misery and suffering to exact my righteous revenge on the monsters who wronged me and I may need some chemical assistance along the way" kind of way) and began to carry out...some sort of...wait. Why aren't these bastards dying?!

Things got more and more confused after that. It seems I was not actually this Timothy-Olyphant-the-star-of-Justified-out-for-revenge guy all the time. No, this was more of a United States of Tara sort of scenario...well, not really. I'll explain. It seems I had this wife (never saw her, this was all in voice-over) who needed a really supportive husband. A really supportive husband. One who would invent a scenario where he was shot by a roving gang of psychotic youth and subsequently spent years developing a heavy narcotics addiction while tracking the perpetrators purely to (I guess) give her life some spice. In the next episode, I still looked like Timothy Olyphant, only dressed up all metrosexual.

That's right. The last several minutes (in dreamtime) consisted of a preview for the next episode of "Ross acts like a psycho to keep his dream wife amused (since dream-Ross is apparently not gay)" and it made no sense whatsoever. And in a way the whole thing made sense.

Isn't it strange how that works? I'm only scratching the surface of how much stuff happened in this dream.

I hope when we die it's like dreaming forever.

Love,
Ross

This morning felt like a Disney cartoon.

Produced by sweatshop workers, that is. Just joking.

This morning was beautiful. It is sunny and wavering on the edge of warm, just cool enough to feel like a softer version of brisk. I walked to Anna Bananna's (and yes, that is how it's spelled--local coffee shop, wonderfulness) and got their signature drink, a chocolate and banana latte. I also purchased a marionberry muffin and watched Nadal v. Monfils on their TV while reading Harper's. It was pretentiously delicious.

As I was walking back to the house, the doughnut shop nearby was hosting a church car wash 'n' wax--a man and a teenage boy were waxing a gorgeous, cherry-red Mustang. All the trees are blossoming, there's pollen in the air. I stopped smoking four days ago (on day 5) and I can smell the flowers. I said, "That's a beauty-ful car." The man said, "Well, thank you, sir!" We may as well have tipped our top-hats at one another.

And twirled our waxed mustaches.

Then, a pit bull puppy (probably about six months) on a leash tied to a traffic sign came trotting up to me, tail all a-wag, and hopped up, placing his paws on my thighs. I scratched his head and chuckled, almost tearing up over how amazing existence can feel.

I can't really explain it. I guess, as the commercial says, "Cymbalta can help." For a while there I took everyone's advice and avoided antidepressants like the plague. It turns out that I may have found the right one for the first time in my life. No side effects. No wiry, manic feeling. It's not really helping with my pain issues, but those are caused by actual physical problems more so than by depression.

In related news, I met with an orthopedist yesterday. Surgery's the word, kids.

I'll keep you updated--I have neglected this blog for far too long.

The world is not a cold dead place.
We are not yet the lost.
Despite calamity come and gone,
a light--oh, yes--a light remains.

Love and kisses and babbling baboons,

2:22 a.m.

Let the dream symbolize nothing but itself
All the symbols gutted and hollow and done
In the dream we were reduced to windblown ash
All tomorrows canceled, all promises voided

All we'd meant to do reduced to pawn tickets tacked to the wall
The I-meant-to way of unpaid debts
And those tickets are ash, what's hawked is gone
And so are we.

In the dream I saw buildings like haphazard dominoes
thrust into clay and baked for too long
and the world was on fire,
and it stood for nothing. The dream stood for itself.

Let me be your everlasting light.

"Let me be your everlasting light
A train going away from pain
Love is the coal
That makes this train roll
Let me be your everlasting light"

Man...let me be your everlasting light. I am awfully happy to be alive right now. Got some sunshine today. Has been a good week all the way around. Back hurting less. Watching Murray v. Ferrer in Australian Open semis. Murray was playing like shit for a while there but he's come around at this point.

This is a good thing.

Have written little bits of poetry here and there lately. Wanna read some? No? Okay, here it is anyhow:

Trudge through the downpour or
Skip through the shower -
The view is up to you.
Whether the glass is
Half-empty/Half-full
The point is to see
There's a glass there at all.

A light yet remains,
We are not yet the doomed.

To find holy beauty in
one simple kiss. To see
I am not yet consigned to the grave.
To think how I could have been
dead long ago--yet life's but a dream
So onward I row.

*

Sitting backwards on the train
the sights retreating from me
Last night dreamt
excessive injections
So waking was the track on which
I fled those bitter longings

There's a sign outside of a church in North Portland that currently reads, "Trouble with infertility?" followed by information on an upcoming lecture for couples. This served as a catalyst for a wonderful short story idea.

However, it just occurred to me that rather than tell you about the idea for the story...I'm just gonna write the damn story. Good thinking, no?

Hope all is well with you, whoever you are.

Some old poems, some old madness.

So. Bored, 2:34am, feel like posting some old stuff -- so here are a few older things...like 8+ years old. Not necessarily the most family-friendly stuff I've ever written, mais c'est la vie, non?
Enjoy.

And this is how things are going...

Tonight the cat was knocking shit over
so I go to the table and look underneath and
she's calmly chewing on something.
A chunk of whatever it is sits on the floor before her,
it looks like a french fry,
I reach to pick it up to throw it away
and it squishes like a rotting maggot
and just then she vomits another
french fry looking thing onto the floor.

The cat vomit seemed like a pretty good metaphor for my life as of late.

"yeah well, i turn to..."

yeah well--i turn to
                                    the queer
                   &said(pointblank)

"yr life the style
         yr life's style--thereof--
empty/lonely                         PointlessPointless."

realized mirror acknowledged mirror I was staring in
                 was mirror a mirror
                                  a mirror

I am pointless am empty
         am pointless am lonely

Ah, to love a boy to love sincere
          to love to lose
will lose, cannot not lose

cannot not not--

triply negative,
                 like my outlook,

Being a pessimist is a good way to avoid
       ever truly loving anyone.

the title is "untitled"

Once (years back)
       I turned to my friend
said "drugs are so fucked up"     ...

... "how much they control you?"

he finished

how much control
    they control
they control you.

My name is Ross and I'm an addict.
12step my way to salvation
                               OR
inject my way to Hell
And I'd panic my way along either path.

Where do you go when here and there are equally dismal options?
What do you do when you're too sad for sober yet dread every drug?

I'm in a horrible fucking place here,
I'm a queer atheist junky!

So where the fuck to go now?

9-29-02

puddles, trees

so today I awoke
    orchid in head
and gave it all away.

The "all" being
    my grip on the here,
any thought of the now,

    trees Feel.
Chainsaws roar through the awareness of leaves,

puddlejumping in branches waving shade
in the oil and cum of the street,

leaping in splashing down the block
    from the catastrophe of
white trash eyeing my innocence
    pretended for show

Eye through plight of falling forest,
    I give this away,
Flower in mind withers, decays,
Puddles soak through to my skin beneath denim.

Down II

Cigarette explodes in a plume of orange glitter
    on the highway behind me
                   (litterbug, firebug)
And I drive on, watch for deer,
    aimless and gutless
humming "I dream of jeannie"

Five months ago I slit my wrists
    and my mind inside
exploded in a plume of orange glitter

And I moved on.
    gutless then as now
Aimless and gutless
    I dreamt of tsunami...

Oh, the places we end up
when we lose our grip and plummet upward
and then crash back down
    with the ear-shattering velocity
of a stone through the sky.

Five months ago I choked down 60 pills
looked through a haze to see me,
and now I am left with a head full of monsters and screams.

There is a place in my mind inside
where all the nightmares come true
And the warmth I once felt
is a plume of orange glitter.

8-11-02

Down

"So how long you been down?"
Her patient eye took in my vein
She smelled on me the Montana glory
of a season of rehab and sun

"Got a shot set right here"
And her fingers like icicles
came clutching my arm,
like a popsicle, an otter pop,
Frozen skin soaked in need.

"Just one hit won't hurt..."
And she peeled back my flesh
exposing an artery
    then stuck deep
and the rush...

"You know it's a dream"
And I woke with a start
to the scent of my demon
gone crashing through the sky,
her ever-starved cackle wafting back on the breeze.

That's probably more than enough, eh?

3 a.m. -- Vampires -- Favorite Music of 2010

Cement stairwell, smoking a menthol, the cat came bounding down the steps and I found myself kind of hoping it wasn't the cat at all but rather a shape-shifting vampire come to convert me--my lifelong secret-diary type fantasy scenario of roaming the streets of a city in search of my next meal finally on the verge of coming true, the immortality breakthrough, then...nothing. Just the cat. I am not a future serial killer, so be not afraid, it's just that I read Interview With the Vampire when I was 10 and have never truly conceded that it's not going to happen.

Walking to the MAX downtown tonight--iPod on shuffle--"Waterfalls" by TLC came on (yeah, it's on my iPod--so what? Don't judge me) and I am here to tell you--that song is still AMAZING after all these years.

It's been a long year.  It's been a hard year. It's been a bouncy-flouncy-happy-sappy-sad-and-cry-then-get-past-it year. I am trying, really, it's just that wintertime is never easy for me. I swear I'll be happier when springtime comes--really.

I have been trying to track down Danielle. Danielle, Danielle, Danielle--all I can think about.

Uninspired.

Back to vampires--something that really bothers me about the whole Twilight thing--Bella is in high school in the first one, right? And then she meets Mr. Glitter-pants...in high school...right? Okay. Why in the hell, if you were a vampire and had achieved immortality, would you spend even one moment in effing HIGH SCHOOL?! Mother of God, man, that's the best thing you can find to do with ETERNITY?!

That was bothering me. For the record, I have never read any of the Twilight books. The only reason I've seen the movies is because Rifftrax (the MST3K guys -- http://www.rifftrax.com) mocked them--and the sheer hilarity of those guys tearing the movies to shreds makes seeing them (almost) worth it.

I'm pretty much going on about nothing.

My favorite albums of 2010 (as if anyone asked)--

1. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
2. Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky
3. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
4. Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
5. Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz
6. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today
7. The National - High Violet
8. Xiu Xiu - Dear God, I Hate Myself
9. Matthew Dear - Black City
10. Sleigh Bells - Treats
11. Surfer Blood - Astro Coast
12. Spoon - Transference
13. Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise
14. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
15. I feel like I should put the latest Hold Steady here--since they're pretty much my favorite--but it really doesn't deserve to be acknowledged alongside these other much more deserving picks. Bit of a letdown.

Those aren't necessarily in perfect order, but you get the idea. The top 5...that's pretty much in the right order.

I've babbled enough.

Poem: "Seasonal Blues, Rebirth Blues"

Seasonal Blues, Rebirth Blues

"My past is sliding down the drain;
I soon will be myself again."
Theodore Roethke

Each moment, as a hatchling,
Altricial--then there's light.
Blinking bowed before some God
To mind's eye feeling's sight.

Capitulation cast aside,
I'll try--is that enough?
I shiver, shook from head to foot,
That's life--its flesh is tough.

So D3 capsules, sun lamp, smiles,
Forcing my way through.
It takes more than a bit of faith
to get from winter black to blue,

So bruised, foreseen or not, you see
it aches to be this ghost.
My former self was due to die,
The new I's time is close.

A new poem, some blabber-blah

Hoping light remains beyond this

In Japan the color of mourning is white.
The blinding flash of strangled brain
Festooned above the funeral route,
All the crepe-stream blank of pigment,
Blank the mind once dying's done.
Maybe find a bit of hope there, thought
Of light beyond alive, not
The blackness promised by
A firm belief in nothing.
12/7/10

Regardless of catharsis
thus-far crying's done no good
it seems the sap can leak all
trite and flood surround with
sighs but I
I'll still be penitent for naught for all
the wrongest sins, to own up must
say "vanity's what needs my focus"
I--a deal so goddamn big
no other face can crowd the mirror
of my mind's eye, I all I see, see

No one looms quite large enough
to crowd me from my view.

It's 11:30 a.m. -- do you know where your motivation is?

It's an ongoing battle, this search for motivation, inspiration, the will to even leave my bed. I guess you could say my S.A.D. has picked up for the winter. Somehow it doesn't come as a huge surprise, what with the fact that every winter is a marathon trudge through grim and grey.

Belly all pocked with life's henpecks, feeling balky at the gates of paradise so rushed out and found a down cafe for coffee, cake, and understanding. Capitulating to despair? Hope not. Dream a little dream, I say a little prayer for you, "I just want to be me" (The Smashing Pumpkins are playing beside me, talk about a blast from the past oh yes indeed) and no there is no sunshine but you learn to cope with grim and cloudy Yes there is now five at least more months to go of drizzle-drop holy Hell I hafta homeward
Just for court what fun is that?

I am using homeward as a verb from here on out.

Ross, taking up valuable webspace for no good reason

It's 12:30 a.m. & I'm bored.

"You become a narcotics addict because you do not have strong motivations in any other direction. Junk wins by default." William S. Burroughs

Was that the case for me? Is it really as simple as I-didn't-have-a-strong-enough-urge-to-do-something-else-with-myself?

I guess it's really not even worth pontificating on that particular subject for too long. The important question isn't "Why did I do this to myself" but rather "What else would I rather do with my time?" Sometimes I feel like other people must have an easier time determining what they want to do with their lives, but that's probably not really the case. Figuring out one's direction in life is not the easiest thing.

All of this would be inconsequential if not for the fact that I genuinely want to do something meaningful with my existence.

I have to go back to Montana for court this week. The thought of being back in Missoula fills me with dread, but I'm sure I'll survive it just fine. And so on.

I give thanks.

I give thanks.

I give thanks, I have faith
that the year to come comes on like
honey and bourbon

That is to say that life's day-to-day way
It intoxicates, opens gates, and
Do not need spirits  Cuz I
I can drift smiling
Sleep of supplication to the yen of faith

Oh and yes that broke the rhythm,
Lord don't castigate, Don't lacerate my
Words my rhymes (seems overly obvious to
Use "time"; Use it to my advantage
       if not in verse, then,

As was saying Oh oh Oh Lord please
Don't suppurate the wound of writer's
Block before my mind's sweet eye
Oh, time, oh Lord my imploration:

Let this year, then, truly be
As sweet as yams in late November.

Amen.

This poem is a failure, but I'm not.

On Perfectionism, Cluttered Mind

Looked in the lint trash
What, a bucket of spiders?
But that's just my smarm, I mean
Charm, yes so charming, I

Feel I should tell
You: See, I am the kind
Of a man whose particles of rage all blend blisters into macrame
What? That's to say I only craft with vengeance, Art is Hell.

I'm not really sure, see, it seems I
have so many words inside and yet
No order, no syntax, no form, no norm.

Can't spin A.D.D. into gold, No,

I can't tremble, blink, then in that
Blink! Distill a miracle
Of words whose sentience, er,
Sentence myself to the chair,

The chair at the computer where,
Confounded,
I shiver and sigh, sob, eye.

Ideas for poems yet no new poems yet

And yeah sat talking about Surrender and thought of how fighting addiction with the mind instead of the heart could only end with one splayed out like a lamb gone to the wolves the throat all ripped and blood pumping heartbeat rhythmic life draining out

And yet that image resulted in nothing, there is no poem forthcoming, and

Pictured blueberry pie with splinters of glass in it, that's how I picture Heroin.

The fact that I don't have the answers doesn't mean I've stopped looking. I keep searching and thinking and obsessing and all this thought changes nothing, but hey, gotta stay occupied somehow right?

I am not sure why the world is As Is, No Warranty, I guess if there is a "God" then we were meant to figure it out for ourselves apparently because no Magic Sky Captain is parting the clouds and booming down voice all baritone to say, "Well, Ross, you want to know bad enough--obviously--so here's what's really going on."

Learning to be comfortable with not knowing the answer to what this is all about -- there's a goal worth striving toward, never for, because if I'm convinced that for (or forth-ward) there will be a solution to the equation then I'm in the same damn position anyhow -- or wait -- or

You see a horse in the field it's back all bowed like a comma yes that's the image I think of from here on when I pontificate on the never-ending way of the day to day...

Back may bend but will not break.

This is that is there is how now?

So. Going to the Wonder Ballroom on Thursday to watch Deerhunter & Real Estate. Pretty much exciting. Tyler got us...wait for it...On. The. List.

I love saying that.

Have lived in Portland for 2 months and I am...ON THE LIST. Yeah, I'm a pretty big deal.

Life has calmed down considerably this past week. I quit taking the Lexapro and am already feeling better. I honestly don't think I need antidepressants at this point. Why bother?

My mood swings were out of control while I was taking that garbage. It's better to be vaguely level-headed than to be all spastic and psycho...granted, I'm still a little bit psycho, but I hardly see how one could expect to NOT be at least a little psycho at 5 months clean.

I don't have much to say--just figured I should post something...um...I swear I'll post something more creative and artsy soon.

Yes oh yes oh no oh okay

And so anyhow I found myself once more spiraling down that same old thread of negativity and pessimism and determined that perhaps a change of attitude was in order and what with this being a new life and all I decided that whaddaya know I pretty much have it within myself to be whatever I want to be and yes oh yes oh no oh okay I guess I'll go ahead and change my outlook and yes and

So then I decided that it was time to be a different person but it wasn't so easy as I had hoped it would be after all so it took a little while but slow and steady wins the race so I'm working on it day by day by

And by I came to the conclusion that whatever I've been doing has been working so I'm gonna go ahead and keep being something other than what I used to be because well what I was is just that -- was -- it's gone it's out it's over it's through I'm into a new way of life

The autumn shade comes drifting in all slowly honey-dripping speed it slithers its tongue along the bones we feel the chill I pray for rain I pray for rain and then remember "what am I praying to?" I don't have the answers I don't know who or what or where

I will remain open
I am done with anti-depressants
I am something other than that which is advertised on the teevee
I am I am I am sitting in the sunshine used up bruised up as a pear in a punching bag
Oh no I'm not that's what once was
it Was it WAS
it's not so much
It's now the now, the was is past, the past has passed good riddance, eh?

We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
This life is a dream, we are a dream experiencing itself.
Yes.

And the world spins on

For a little while there I thought we were at the dawn of a new age of enlightenment. To tell you the truth, I am pretty sure it's just more of the same--not in a bad way or anything, but I don't think the world is changing nearly so dramatically or quickly as I previously believed.

I was pondering war tonight. The U.S. government is responsible for perhaps the most brilliant propaganda effort in history. How else to explain a slack-jawed, wall-eyed populace bleating like sheep as we march into two unjustified wars of aggression? Two countries that never attacked us. Two countries that have already been blisteringly smashed into near oblivion. And yet somehow over half of the country zombie-like marches in lockstep with the party line.

Wake. Up.
